A stout perennial with a leafy flowering scape 30-60 cm tall, growing from a firm, ovoid tuber and a second withered one.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is a very rare plant [confined to 5 native sites plus a few introduced] of calcareous woodlands in E. and S.E. England. Come to the Cévennes, where it can be readily found

Fleurs : d'un rose cendré ponctué de pourpre, en épi ovale-oblong peu serré ; bractées bien plus courtes que l'ovaire ; divisions du périanthe conniventes en casque ovoïde-acuminé, soudées intérieurement ; labelle tripartit, à lobes latéraux linéaires écartés, le moyen linéaire à la base, puis dilaté en 2 lobules divergents 2-3 fois plus larges et 2 fois plus courts que les lobes latéraux ; éperon de moitié plus court que l'ovaire.
Floraison France : Mai-juin.
Flowers: 16-20 mm long, 8 mm wide, in a rather dense raceme subtended by minute bracts; outer perianth segments pale red-violet, ovate, acuminate; inner linear-acute, all connivent to form the hood; lip white, flushed with violet, with dark violet spots and with two rather short and spreading upper lobes, two broad, squarish, recurved, basal lobes and a median short, triangular tooth; spur rather stout, curved, about half the length of the ovary;
Flowering UK: Late May-late June.
